FROM THE PRESIDENT'S BENCH
1988 AMRCA Nationals - Garold Frymire

Word Doc

With each Nationals getting better and better, with a growing attendance and highly competitive people and with so many good things happening, why does the President's message seem harder and harder to write? This year's Nats really topped them all with entries from Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, New York, Northern California and, of course, our own Southern California group. Topping it all was Roy Torrey's World Record 10cc run of 199.01MPH (320.275km), (now an officially recognized "World Record" by the WMCR. Note: this is the first World Record set outside the FEMA Countries). The weather was nice but high humidity made fuel setting difficult. However, on the last heat of August 18, Roy found the right combo and it all came together. Congratulations Roy for the World Record as well as the new American Record. Thanks for keeping it in America for a while longer.

Thanks to all race committee members: Rules and Referee - Nick Tucci, Roy Torrey and myself: Stewart: Ray Yates, and a new appointment - Race Secretary - Phil McDonald; Timers: Jill McDonald and Dorothy Frymire; Line Master - Nick Tucci II. Becky Shelton did a fantastic job selling banquet and raffle tickets; Betty Willes arranged for the Banquet and she and Dorothy selected the trophies. Loyd had a great party at his house, Thursday, August 18, catered by Lisa and Jack Shelton, with enough food to feed us lunch the following day. And just a general thanks to all of you guys, too many to mention, who did a super job of readying the track. I particularly want to thank Dick McCoy for the fuel and glow plugs; Loyd Torrey for our new double digital clocks and separate lap timer with driver starter button, and for the cables; Ray Yates for being our Construction Boss and donating so much of his time, materials and equipment. Can't forget Chris for keeping a sharp eye on the track and maintenance. Thanks to Alberto Dono - Condor Trading Co. International for donating a Picco - P60 Engine; and Tidewater Engineering and Machine Co. For Picco Caps and bits and pieces. Congratulations to Roy Torrey for breaking the World and AMRCA - National 10cc Records. Now the bad news - since Roy broke the record it nudged the cable size up to 1.9mm, this is conforming to WMCA Rules. AMRCA used the new cable starting with the next 10cc heat. A Cablegram was sent to WMCA President Bengt Abrahamson in Sweden, and WMCA Secretary Karl Sepetauc in Australia advising them of the World Record and the consequent cable change.

Dorothy and I had a pleasant trip to Europe. We met the Helanders from Sweden in Kapfenhardt, Germany and then drove along with them to Basel, Switzerland for the FEMA Championships. This was most enjoyable. In Basel we stayed at the La Plaza Hotel - very nice, however miles from the track and we got lost every day getting to the track. The track was very rough and hard on cars and engines. I finally squeaked out a 307km with a broken tire, if we had been competing it would have been good for 3rd Place. The race was well attended, and we enjoyed meeting and racing with out good friends from Bulgaria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Soviet Union, Sweden and Switzerland. We spent the following week touring Italy, Austria and Germany.

AMRCA is putting it into high gear for preparations for the 4th World Championships in Los Angeles, September 29, 30 and October 1, 1989. Only a year away. We hope to get as much done as we can before the rains. Rain, What's that? As I mentioned before, Alberto Dono donated a Picco P60 engine that we raffled off - Becky Shelton won it, and auctioned it off, Loyd Torrey was high bidder and graciously gave it to Ray Yates. Ray lost his car on a broken cable in the Spring. The engine created great fun and $400.00 dollars toward our 4th World Championship fund. As they say this time of year - "Let's go big team"! Back to the ugh work bench -
