Race Report 2007 AMRCA Nationals At Whittier Narrows, California As a perfect ending to
summer in California, we had five great days of racing at the nationals this
year. Thanks to all the efforts of the VMRCA club members the track and
facility was in great shape. Wednesday and Thursday
were spent tuning up the cars in all classes with lots of entries in the open
wheel mite divisions. Some of the 10cc cars were pushing the 200mph mark and it
looked like Dick Boone had the car to beat. Friday morning started the
official timing and, even though it was a busy schedule with all classes
running, we managed to get in three heats before the day was over. Paul Otto
Strobel along with Dick Boone and Steve Morse were the leaders in 10cc and Jack
O'donnell was running in the 170s in 5cc. Class 3a with 8 entries were busy with
Jack Boudakian and John Ellis running up front. Lots of entries in the mite
classes but most had trouble completing timed runs. Rich Democh persevered with
his torpedo .15 powered Kuebler and got in a 102mph run for a new record in
class 7B. Best time in class 9 Modern
Nostalgia was a 128 mph run by Stuart Hamill and. Class 10 went to Marshall Ziegert at 121. Friday night everyone came to Stuart’s house for a buffet
dinner-drinks and trading speed secrets. Saturday’s race was
scheduled along with our semi annual Fun Run and Collecto sponsored by Bob
Jaquez, so it was a busy morning with lots of cars engines and race parts being
bought and sold along with the official races. Lots of entries got in official runs and the top speeds in all
classes were finalized that day and then we were off to the banquet on Saturday
night. Many entrants had to start
for home so the Sunday races were a smaller turnout but we did get in a full
day of events. After lots of testing
and running Dick Boone was able to set fastest time with his original ground
effect car at 200. 514 -- great job, Dick!! The VMRCA members would
like to thank everyone for making the races a success and especially those out
of town visitors like Nick Tucci and his dad from New York and Paul Otto
Strobel from Europe. All the boys from
the northwest were great racers and
lots of help. We are all looking forward
to the 2008 nationals in New York. Charlie
