1991 AMRCA Nationals Race Report
Whittier Narrows, CA

By J. Phil McDonald

Heard a commercial a couple of nights back by a liquor company. This big husky type starts out by saying:

" S m o o o o o th ! "

If he thinks his liquor is smooth, he ought to have seen the operation of the 1991 A.M.R.C.A. Untied States Nationals as hosted by the Valley Miniature Racing Car Associations!!! Now I've been in this sport for something like 25 years now and have seen many a race ran all over the globe and I know that for many of us we all have years of experience. But, every national or international event always seems to have it's little stumbling points. The 1991 Nationals had NONE! Everyone was in the right place at the right time. Even the annual meeting as a breeze! When the meeting adjourned there were several of us left sitting around with our mouths hanging open, scratching our heads. No disputes, no heated discussion, nothing. The most exciting thing to transpire was the fact that we are going to have a contest for the A.M.R.C.A. Presidency for the first time in a number of years.

Even the Vagabond Hotel was a dream with the super rate that Betty Willes secured for us of $35.00 a night I quickly figured out that it would be cheaper to live full time at the Vagabond than it would to make the mortgage payment, pay taxes and insurance on my home. If it wasn't so cussed far to work I would give it some serious thought.

Loyd's yard party was super and the food excellent. On behalf of the A.M.R.C.A. and its members, "THANKS LOYD'! This event has been looked forward to each California Nationals for many years.

My commendations to the V.M.R.CA. and to it's membership. You all did an excellent job!!!

I really enjoyed the Awards Banquet! The dinner was great. It was especially rewarding to be able to hand Loyd Torrey his much belated W.M.C.R. World Certificate. That was a long and frustrating battle. At several points in the fight I felt like I was bashing my head against the proverbial block wall. On behalf of us all Loyd, "CONGRATULATIONS!!"

Well, my term as President is drawing to an end. We have two excellent people running for the slot in 92, either of which will an excellent job of leading our group. Who ever you vote for you can do so with confidence.

1992 is World Championship year. This time we go to Orebro, Sweden. Jill and I visited Sweden back in the 70's and I am looking forward to returning.

Thanks again everyone for your support.
