1986 AMRCA NATIONALS

From the PRESIDENT'S WORKBENCH -

Sydney, November 11, 1986 - arrival day for the 3rd World Championships. Weather was warm, sunny and beautiful! November 12, 13,14, 15 & 16, intermittent - RAIN, RAIN, RAIN! The routine was, wait for the rain to stop, dry out the track and run a few cars before the rain started again. However, it was a great race and great trip. The track and facilities were outstanding including the race preparation, organization, and conduction of the race. The Social activities were also outstanding and very enjoyable. Due to the weather, it was very difficult to find the correct needle valve setting and also to establish the proper tire size. We were never quite sure which way to go. These conditions - "Really draw the old pucker string up tight." In the end, things turned out very good. We should be proud of our small group. With Dorothy's - GO, GO, G0 - run of 304.99KPH for 2nd place and Loyd's run of 304.45 KPH for 3rd place definitely let everyone know we were there. The bit about the GO, GO, GO - is in reference to an article in the FEMA Newsletter by Otto Stromble from Switzerland. He reported that Dorothy shouted Go, Go, Go and her car WENT, WENT WENT! Incidentally this run knocked Otto out of 2nd place and Loyds following run out of 3rd place. Very exciting and of course disappointing to him; however, he is a fine competitor and a fine gentleman and he will be back. Walter Roder, (W.Ger.), with a speed of 310.55KPH is the champ. He had 2 runs at about the same speed "no problems" at all.

Regarding the W.M.C.R. business meeting, we made a very strong objection to the current method of arriving at cable sizes. (Please read the included minutes of the meeting in this issue.) The question of representation also came up - When FEMA decides to change the rules - WMCR is obligated to accept these new rules. Since we are not members of FEMA - (USA and Australia), we have no voice, (or vote), on the proposed changes. Please read paragraph #8a,b, c - in the minutes.) One small bit of good news - the World Championships will now be 3 days, one run per day, instead of 2 days. The other good news is that the 4th World Championships will be held in the good old USA in 1989. Your executive committee has tentatively decided to hold this race in Los Angeles, Whittier Narrows; since our Nationals 1989, are scheduled in Anderson, Indiana, the visitors would then be able to attend 2 major races for 1 trip. Most of the people mentioned this point when asked about their preferences. They also mentioned the wider selection of tourist sites available in the Los Angeles area. Start thinking about dates as this will be NO. 1 on the agenda at the AMRCA General business meeting this summer. These dates must be coordinated with the FEMA - (European Championships), which is usually scheduled for the 1st weekend in August. Putting on a World Championships is a Major undertaking!!! We must start planning now and begin working on naming, a Chairman, and committee heads for the various projects, at this summers Nationals. We will need help from everyone who will be able to contribute banners etc. and just good physical help. There is also the possibility of a special program with sponsors and advertising. At least come prepared to discuss these issues at the 1987 Nats. Also you can always write Phil and offer help and ideas.

From Sydney, Dorothy, Phil and Loyd and I, drove up to Brisbane, stopping at the Gold Coast and just enjoyed the sights. November 22, we participated in Race in Brisbane, put on by the Queensland Miniature Race Car Club. This was a fun day, and particularly since Dorothy's car won 3rd place.

I want to congratulate the committee and all concerned with the 3rd World Championships on staging a great race, also for the hospitality and organization of the Brisbane race and the Awards Buffet Dinner at the Doug Harding home.

One more line about "Cable Sizes," - I made a run at the "MECA Fun Run" yesterday, January 10, '87 would you believe 195.22MPH, with 2 laps at .76 secs., - (197.37MPH), 317.62KPH with Dororthy's car. 317.62KPH is over the World Record and would almost require a change to 1.8mm (from 1.7mm) cable sizes even on the 35ft track.

Max. force on 1.7mmcable = 4721 neutron Force on Cable @ 317.62KPH = 470 neutrons - (16 N.Extra Cap.)

Guys - The executive Board of AMRCA thinks it is time to "Bite the Bullet" and adapt the FEMA and WMCR safety rules.

Note: Loyd and I both had laps over 310.KPH in Sydney (1.8mm cable)

So, to conform with W.M.C.R. & be safe, we must now change to 1.8mm cable. Who knows - we might even go faster.

I really must get back to the workbench - "Happy New Year"
