1980 AMRCA NATIONALS

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S WORK BENCH:

NEW AMRCA RECORDS

Class V - (OPEN FUEL) - Roy Torrey - 180.72MPH

Class V - (80 - 20 fuel) - Phil McDonald - 166.98MPH

Class 11 - (hot) - Kenny Phillips - 149.75 MPH

What an outstanding Nat's race - 3 new AMRCA records set and a really great race. We were sorry not to see more of the regulars; we really missed everyone, maybe next year in California!

We owe Phil and Jill our thanks for all their work to make this year's Nat's so successful. The social at their house (with movies from the European Championships in Sweden 1978) - was especially enjoyable, and of course, the terrific banquet at the Pelican.

Most of the news is already covered in this issue by Dorothy (our trip to Europe), Phil (1980 Nationals), and Roger, (track progress from New York). I can only emphasize the wonderful reception we received at the World Championships, not only from the hosting DMMC, German Club, but people from all the Countries (11), in the competition, they were like old friends. No request for help was ever refused. This Swiss Nationals in Basel was more of the same, except on a smaller scale. We will never forget the comradeship and sportsmanship displayed at both events. We cannot thank the German and Swiss enough for their great hospitality.

Phil's AMRCA (80-20) record of 166.98mph (270, Km), would have given him 10th place at the World Championships - 38 entries - I think this is a very high achievement. Several California members are also planning (80-20) racing, so - maybe by next year we can give Phil some competition.

I believe we are really missing the boat by not going to (80-20) fuel exclusively. We are still running Nitro, the rest of the world has proven (80-20) fuel to be superior in speed to Nitro mixtures. As of January 1, 1981, we will be all alone with our inferior fuels, broken engines and slower speeds. True, we have much to learn about running (80-20) fuel, however, I thought we were all attracted to this hobby because of the great challenge.
